Summer Expedition Opportunities
A fusion of wilderness expedition and community outreach, offers a unique opportunity for youth to explore the Hawaiian Islands. The momentum of the community forged in the valleys and mountains of the Big Island is further empowered by the incorporation of a focus project and topic of study.
Our focus projects include
- Reforestation Projects
- Beach Clean-ups
- Life Story Projects
- Animal Outreach
- Community Garden Projects
- Native Plant Restoration
Our topics of study include
- Water Awareness
- Sustainable Energy
- Nutrition
- Hawaiian Studies
- Botany
- Marine Science
- Emergency Preparedness/Response
- Urban Gardens
While each expedition will have touch upon many of these areas, one will be highlighted as a group's main focus. Upon our return to the larger community, we will take what we have learned and put our energy towards a variety of island wide service projects. This will help to solidify the learning forged in the wilderness and serve as a real world example of the what is possible when you work hard for something and focus on your goals.
Hawaiian Systems of Thought
Each of our expeditions is facilitated by highly qualified individuals who share a passion for our youth and the natural world. We feel fortunate to live on these islands and believe it is important to honor the people of these lands. Interwoven into our expedition models is a strong Hawaiian component, we seek to expose students to systems of thought including:
- Huikala – Forgiveness
- Aloha – Unconditional Love
- Kupono – Honesty
- Ho 'okahua No 'ono 'o – To settle down to a task with determination to see it through
- Koa – Courage
- Ku Ha 'o – Self Reliance
- Lokahi – Harmony in Unity
- Pa 'ahana – The giving of oneself to one's work
These eight themes will be taught by native teachers and will serve as ongoing points of discussion throughout our expedition. Each expedition is facilitated by a five person staff team comprised of a lead instructor, medic, health & wellness, support and a local land expert.
